JEFFREY D. HARRIS
Jeffrey D. Harris was born on the island of Guam and spent much of his youth exploring pristine beaches, swimming through coral reefs and being surrounded by tropical jungles. After graduating from high school and attending the University of Guam, Jeff left the island to study graphic design and illustration at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. There, he spent many years exploring darkened back alleys, walking along deserted train tracks and being surrounded by a bustling and reemerging city. It is the contrast between these two very different worlds that has helped Jeffrey to form his unique perspective on life and to develop his understanding of how we humans communicate with one another. Enduring many winters in Pittsburgh after living most of his life on an island also gave him a very unique perspective on warmth... and the occasional lack there of.
Since graduating from AIP, Jeffrey has been working in the design field for nearly 30 years. He is a versatile visual communicator and has had great success over the years as an illustrator, graphic designer, art director and creative director. He has produced freelance graphic design and illustration work since 1987 and has been a freelance designer/illustrator for the past 17 years.
In addition to his freelance work, Jeffrey creates an internationally syndicated kids feature called Shortcuts. Shortcuts mixes bold, colorful artwork with fun, interesting facts to create a kids page that actually entertains as it educates. Each weekly issue is devoted to a single subject, offering mini-lessons on science, geography, animals, food, history and holidays. Shortcuts is distributed to more than 450 newspapers worldwide and reaches more than 30 million readers each week.
